Mark Twain said “Forgiveness is the fragrance that the violet sheds on the heel that has crushed it” such a beautiful quote that truly encapsulates the intent behind true forgiveness.
Forgiveness is defined in the dictionary as the ‘letting go of resentment, indignation, or anger against another person for a perceived offense, difference, or mistake’. Self- forgiveness can alleviate our hurt or emotional turmoil, help us to gain closure, and assist us in the processing of moving forward with our lives. Forgiveness does not necessarily mean that we condone the event but rather we focus upon love or loving thoughts surrounding what has happened and the letting go of negative thoughts.
For many of us who have experienced traumatic events or decisions on the part of others (or ourselves) forgiveness may seem impossible, and the need for justice overwhelming. Those who have found it in their hearts to forgive have found that forgiveness can lead to healing and positive change for all.
All the major religions teach that forgiveness is something we should practice; something we should do; and many of these teachings have formed the basis for the varying modern day traditions and practices.
While there are varying views on forgiveness as an act, forgiveness can also be a sign that we have reached a place of healing because when we have spent the time exploring our emotions relating to the event, expressing what we need to and reaching a place where a change in perspective has occurred, forgiveness becomes a simple and almost natural next step.
