Is it Time to ‘Adjust’ Your Plan?

While having dinner the other night with some close friends the conversation turned to our favourite movies; All-time favourites, best action movie, thrillers, and so on until we reached ‘best romantic movie’.  Being a die-hard romantic for my entire life I reeled through the obvious list of Nicholas Sparks movies, titanic and so on, before my thoughts turned to the movie ‘The Adjustment Bureau’ with Matt Damon and Emily Blunt.  Not the most obvious movie to fall into the ‘romance’ category but for me it represents romance perfectly.

The Hero, David – Matt Damon, is on a quest to achieve what he wants from life (the Presidency of the United States) and is distracted from his quest by his desire to be with his soul mate, Elise – Emily Blunt. His attempts to include her in his plan are continually thwarted by a group called ‘The Adjustment Bureau’  who represent ‘The Chairman’, the person who apparently sets the destiny of each individual for the sake of the survival of the planet.  After initially submitting to their threats and agreeing to live his life without her,  David sets about to change the plan by choosing a different destiny so that he can be with the one he loves.

David to Elise: “I can go through this door alone. You’ll never see me or the people chasing us again, or you can come with me, and I don’t know what’s on the other side, but you’d be next to me and that’s all I’ve wanted since the minute I met you.”

He fights the ‘system’ and overcomes every obstacle that ‘The Adjustment Bureau’ places in his way, he risks everything to be with the one he loves.

David to The Adjustment bureau representative: “I don’t care what you put in my way, I’m not giving up!”

Eventually his belief, courage and relentless determination on his quest for what he wants is rewarded by The Chairman agreeing to change ‘The Plan’.

For me I cannot think of anything more romantic than someone fighting for the life they want with the one they love.

The closing commentary from The Adjustment Bureau Representative really sums it up: “Most people live life on the path we set for them, too afraid to explore any other. But once in a while people like you come along who knock down all the obstacles we put in your way. People who realize freewill is a gift that you’ll never know how to use until you fight for it. I think that’s the chairman’s real plan. That maybe one day, he won’t write the plan, you will.”

How are you living your life?  Are you following ‘The Plan’ that society or those around you have set for you or are you using the freewill that is available to all of us if we choose to fight for it?

Live the life you dream of;  Be a true romantic; Don’t settle for less, it’s time to write your own plan….

Talk to you soon
