Thoughts on Happiness

I came across this beautiful story when listening to Dr Wayne Dyer the other day – enjoy!

The Story of the Kitten and the Cat

The Kitten

The kitten is out in the alley chasing its tail around and around and the old alley cat comes up to it and says ‘what are you doing’ and the kitten says ‘well I have just come back from cat philosophy school and they taught us two important things, number one is that the most important thing for a cat is happiness and number two is that happiness is located in our tail so I have figured out that if I can just get a hold of it by chasing it until I get it, when I do I will have a lock on eternal happiness’.

The Alley Cat

The old alley cat considers his response for a moment and says ‘well I didn’t have the same advantages that you have had by going to cat philosophy school, I have lived out here in the alley for most of my life but the amazing thing is that I learned the same two things that you did, the most important thing to a cat is in fact happiness and that happiness is indeed located in our tails.  The only difference between me and you is that what I have learned out here is that when I follow my heart happiness follows after me wherever I go.’

Now for ‘humans’ this simple approach to achieving happiness can feel hard to believe when we have been taught that we must ‘search’ for happiness and that ‘doing” something in exchange for happiness is crucial.

It’s a different way of thinking when instead we consider that maybe its about ‘allowing’, ‘not doing’ and trusting (especially in ourselves);  and knowing that when we align ourselves with what we want,  happiness will naturally follow….

Are you a kitten or and alley cat?
